Sana Gesundheitscampus München New Building SETTING NEW STANDARDS Sana Kliniken Solln Sendling GmbH is one of the largest competence centres for orthopaedic surgery in southern Ger many treating annualy approx 8 000 inpatients and performing some 3 000 endoprosthetic procedures This year wit nessed the consolidation of the two existing orthopaedic clinics into a pioneering new clinic at the Sana Gesundheitscam pus in Munich The task in hand to integrate a new high tech operating centre and a fully functional 170 bed clinic building into an inner city perimeter block development was particularly challenging Through close consultation with the relevant Historic Buildings Authority and the City of Munich town planning commission a compact structure with an urban facade was developed whose proportions eaves and roof height blended in with the surrounding buildings The ground floor of the new structure follows the plot boundary and street configuration It houses the key medical func tion areas including 6 operating theatres with natural light the intensive care unit and the central sterilisation depart ment The upper floors set back from the street provide the patient rooms with an aspect onto an open and yet enclosed inner courtyard Visitors and patients are welcomed in the entrance foyer by well known Munich landmarks These can also be found throughout the building on photographic collages covering entire walls and in finely framed pictures in the patient rooms Each of the generously proportioned wards with their high and bright rooms are particularly aesthetic and comfortable with fine colours and materials which reflect the common standards set by the client and the architects a positive am bience as a catalyst for convalescence 30
