Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital New Building Institute Centre Haus I composure The new Institute Centre Haus I on the grounds of the Karlsruhe Municipal Hospital helps to reorganise the once ge nerous but now fragmented hospital complex and strengthen it through centralisation The rhythm and colour of the building block created in a binding architectural language is based on that of the listed buildings on the site and does not reveal its inner high tech status The new building contrasts very naturally the public part of the campus with the new services and delivery yard at the rear The central axis of the five storey building leads intuitively through the bilateral building behind its striking red framed entrance area which faces the side of the clinic and the historic director s villa Along this axis which pierces the entire width of the building to the rear ramp down to the services and delivery yard all functional locations and worksta tions are logically layered to facilitate well functioning internal work and exchange processes The new building contains the large work and storage areas of the hospital pharmacy and behind closed window fronts ultra modern clean rooms as well as the laboratories of the Department of Microbiology and Hospital Hygiene Among them are laboratory areas of protection levels 2 and 3 of the Ordinance on Biological Substances Contemporary learning also finds its place here Future technical laboratory assistants study here interactively at sixteen modern training places in a digital classroom 20
